Retained by client to assist their engineering group with drafting or revising capital project-related company policies including Capital Assets, Purchasing, Spare Parts and Manufacturing Data and Automation policies. Also drafted a comprehensive Environmental Management policy that addressed the full range of chemical, biological and physical environmental hazards that the company works with including hazardous materials, non-native plants and animals, plant pests and genetically modified organisms.

This was a follow-on project from the work I did to assist a client with creating an engineering group organizational development plan. The plan called for revisions to several existing company policies and creation of several new policies. To assist this effort, I reviewed the company’s existing policies and procedures and the relevant laws and regulations, including everything from building codes to hazardous materials regulations to international agreements on genetically modified organisms. I then used this information and my own plant operations and capital projects experience to prepare first drafts of these new and revised policies for the client.
The goal was to develop policies that were relevant to all company operations worldwide. I also recognized that in some areas, like environmental regulations, some countries may have weaker standards than others. With the draft texts and accompanying commentary, I attempted to encourage discussion within the company as to what minimum worldwide standards they wanted to establish as part of their corporate identity.
My work on the Environmental Management policy let to a separate project to develop a complete set of Responsible Care® policies for this company’s entire group of companies.
