Cargill Citric Acid Evaporator Expansion

Project Engineer/Lead Process Engineer for detailed engineering project to add capacity to a citric acid mechanical vapor recompression evaporator. Responsible for developing P&IDs, hydraulic calculations, and equipment specifications. Coordinated activities of piping, mechanical, and structural design team.

Unit operations: Multiple-effect falling film evaporation with mechanical vapor recompression
Product: Citric acid
Company: Cargill, Incorporated
Location: Eddyville, Iowa

Cargill has a large citric acid fermentation plant in Eddyville and I worked on this project when I was a Project Engineer at Middough Inc., working out of their Chicago office. The downstream recovery process for citric acid includes concentration by multiple-effect evaporation and this project added capacity by adding another effect, with mechanical vapor recompression, to their existing falling film evaporator train.
